and 100
2.NBT.6– Add up to four 2-digit numbers using different strategies.
OBJECTIVE: Learn and understand how to add up to four whole numbers using
different strategies.
MATERIALS: (Per 2 students)
2 regular dice
1 Adding Multiples Score Sheet Template
1 pencil
LESSON DISCUSSION:
Explain and define the vocabulary terms “addends” and “sum” to the students.
Define that the “addends” are the numbers that are being added, and the result,
or answer, when adding two or more numbers is called the “sum”.
Explain to students that when adding multi-digit numbers, one must add the
“ones” digit first, then the “tens” digit, and then the “hundreds” digit.
Teach students techniques of adding multiples of 10 and 100 numbers.
Note that in this activity, students will only be adding whole numbers within
1,000.
Procedure:
Step 1: Group the students into pairs.
Step 2: Give each pair of students their materials. Tell them to write their names
on the Adding Multiples Score Sheet.
Step 3: Tell the students that in this game, one dot on the die represents 10. That
is,
= 10 = 20 = 30
= 40 = 50 = 60
