2.MD.8– Identify names and values of common coins.
OBJECTIVE: Learn to identify the name and give the values of common coins.
MATERIALS: (for teacher)
5 pennies
5 dimes
5 nickels
5 quarters
MATERIALS: (per student)
1 dry erase board
1 dry erase marker
LESSON DISCUSSION:
Teach students the names and values of different common coins, including penny,
dime, nickel, quarter, and dollar. Help students understand that a penny is worth 1
cent, a nickel is worth 5 cents, a dime is worth 10 cents, a quarter is worth 25 cents,
and a dollar is worth $1.00.
Procedure:
Step 1: Show the students 3 pennies, 2 nickels, 3 dimes, and a quarter.
Step 2: Ask the students if they know the total value of the coins.
Step 3: Ask the students to divide their dry erase boards into four columns.
Step 4: On top of the columns, tell the students write “Penny”, “Nickel”, “Dime", and
“Quarter”.
Step 5: In the column for “Penny”, instruct the students to draw three circles and put
the number 1 inside each circle.
Step 6: In the column for “Nickel”, instruct the students to draw two circles and put the
number 5 inside each circle.
Step 7: In the column for “Dime”, instruct the students to draw three circles and put the
number 10 inside each circle.
